Addiction
Many clients either struggle with, or have a relationship with, someone who struggles with addiction. Addiction as a clinical problem can be diagnosed for substances such as illicit drugs and alcohol, or for issues such as gambling. Many people may also struggle with addiction to other issues such as overeating, shopping, video games/technology, prescription medication, etc.
There are numerous factors that make an individual more susceptible to developing an addiction, including both genetic and environmental factors. Addiction can cause shame and guilt in the addicted person and worry and distress for those who care about them.
The video above wonderfully illustrates that our traditional beliefs about addiction, and our traditional approaches to managing addiction, need to be revisited.
