Cognitive Assessments (IQ Tests)

Perception Psychology Mackay routinely completes cognitive assessments for both children and adults. Clients may be referred by their GP, specialist, school or educational institution, insurance provider, or allied health professional.

WHAT IS A COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT?

A cognitive assessment is a structured, standardised psychometric test that measures an individual’s intellectual functioning, often summarised as an Intelligence Quotient (IQ). The average IQ is set at 100, but individuals vary significantly in their cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

Cognitive assessments evaluate:

• Verbal comprehension – understanding and using language
• Perceptual reasoning – solving visual problems and patterns
• Working memory – holding and manipulating information
• Processing speed – how quickly one can take in and use information
• Long-term retrieval and learning efficiency

Each person's performance across these areas is different, and the results provide a detailed profile of cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

The assessment takes approximately two hours and involves a series of age-appropriate tasks (called subtests). After completion, the practitioner:

• Scores each subtest and generates an overall IQ score
• Analyses performance in individual cognitive areas
• Prepares a comprehensive written report comparing results to population norms
• Outlines key findings and practical implications for learning, work, or daily functioning

WHEN IS A COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT USEFUL?

Cognitive assessments are useful for a range of reasons, including:

• Exploring potential Specific Learning Disorders (as part of a broader assessment)
• Investigating possible Intellectual Disability
• Identifying Giftedness
• Assessing changes or declines in functioning due to illness, injury, or ageing
• Supporting applications for funding, support services, or educational adjustments
