Safety Planning for Self-Harm or Suicidal Ideation

Practical support for managing distress and staying safe

When someone is experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, it’s essential to have a clear, personalised plan to help them stay safe and access support. A safety plan outlines practical steps for managing intense distress, reducing risk, and identifying ways to feel more connected and in control.

At Perception Psychology Mackay, we work with children, teens, and adults to create individualised safety plans using evidence-based tools.

What is a Safety Plan?

A safety plan is a simple, structured guide that supports a person when they are feeling overwhelmed or at risk. It typically includes:

  • Warning signs – knowing when things are escalating
  • Coping strategies – ways to calm yourself without needing others
  • Support people – who you can talk to when things get hard
  • Safe places – where you can go to feel secure
  • Professional help – contact details for therapists or crisis services
  • Means safety – reducing access to things that could cause harm
