Specific Learning Disorders

Many individuals experience difficulties with learning, often due to underlying challenges such as Specific Learning Disorders (SLD). These may affect:

  • Reading ability – also known as Dyslexia
  • Writing ability – also known as Dysgraphia
  • Mathematics ability – also known as Dyscalculia

Identifying an SLD is essential to ensure individuals can access the strategies, supports, and accommodations they need to succeed in their learning environments.

Diagnosis

A diagnosis of SLD is made when a person experiences ongoing difficulties in a specific learning area (reading, writing, or maths), despite appropriate intervention and support. These difficulties usually result in performance below what is expected for their age or grade level.

At Perception Psychology Mackay, we offer comprehensive learning assessments for children aged 6 to 17 years. The assessment takes up to/approximately four hours and involves multiple structured, reliable subtests. Each assessment includes:

  • Cognitive Assessment – to measure general intellectual functioning
  • Achievement (Learning) Assessment – using the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT) to evaluate academic skills such as reading, spelling, comprehension, writing, mathematics, and oral language

 Following the assessment, we provide:

  • A comprehensive diagnostic report
  • Clear interpretation of cognitive and academic profiles
  • Identification of any Specific Learning Disorders
  • A professional diagnosis, if criteria are met

Support Strategies

Our diagnostic reports include detailed, individualised recommendations to support learning in both home and school environments. These include:

  • Evidence-based strategies to build skills in areas of difficulty
  • Classroom accommodations and learning adjustments
  • Tools to support memory, organisation, and task managemen
  • Teaching approaches tailored to the learner’s strengths and needs

At Perception Psychology Mackay, we are committed to ensuring that every child receives practical, actionable guidance to support long-term academic success.
