THE DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS
There is a lot of confusion for clients and their families around the process of undertaking a psychological assessment in terms of seeking a diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorder or for mental health concerns. As there is no standard pathway this leads to frustration for clients and their families, as well as for health professionals. This handout aims to address some of the questions and confusion around the assessment process for clients, health professionals, and school staff.
Psychologists are specifically trained in the assessment of neurodevelopmental disorders, cognitive difficulties/learning disorders, functional capacity/adaptive behaviours, and clinical issues/mental health disorders. Perception Psychology Mackay has access to up-to-date, evidence-based, valid and reliable assessment tools.
Kat Dunn, our principal psychologist, has a special interest in, and extensive experience of, psychological assessment.
Psychological Assessment is used to identify if individuals meet the criteria for neurodevelopmental disorders such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for both Children and Adults.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A psychologist will compete a clinical assessment and make a diagnosis. Paediatric or psychiatric review of a psychological assessment and diagnosis is encouraged to allow a client to discuss pharmacological treatment options.
Autism Spectrum Disorder: Only ASD requires a multidisciplinary approach to assessment and diagnosis (i.e., best practice involves more than one health professional making the diagnosis – in these cases we complete the assessment and forward the information to the paediatrician or psychiatrist for review).
Psychological Assessment is used to measure an individual's intellectual abilities. This can include identifying their overall level of intellectual functioning and cognitive strengths and weaknesses, identify reductions in intellectual functioning, and/or determine Intellectual Impairment.
Perception Psychology is able to provide IQ assessments for individuals aged between 2 to 99 years. Perception Psychology is also able to assess IQ in non-verbal individuals aged between 4 to 17 years.
An Achievement assessment is a type of Psychological Assessment used to provide a measure of a client's academic functioning and/or identify areas of academic strength and weakness.
Psychological Assessment exploring the possibility of Specific Learning Disorders (SLD e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia) involves completing assessments of both intellectual ability and academic ability.
Perception Psychology is able to provide assessments of academic achievement for students from Prep to Year 12.
Functional Capacity/Adaptive Behaviour assessments measure a client's abilities with regards to areas such as communication, social participation, and practical day-to-day skills. These assessments are sometimes included in broader psychological assessments and/or to determine a client's level of functioning when seeking supports (such as NDIS).
Perception Psychology can complete Functional Capacity/Adaptive Behaviour assessments for Children and Adults.
Perception Psychology provides clinical assessment of mental health disorders including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, significant mental health concerns such as schizophrenia, personality disorders, etc., as required.
Perception Psychology is also able to complete psychological assessments as requested for pre-surgery, pre-adoption, pre-fertility treatment, employment, insurance, court, etc.
